Brothers of Metal is an eight piece metal band from Sweden featuring three vocalists, the powerful clean vocals of female singer lva Eriksson (Voice of the Valkyries), the aggressive vocals of Joakim Lindbäck Eriksson (reminicent of Joakim Brodén of Sabaton), and the spoken words of Mats Nilsson. Musically, Brothers of Metal are influenced by old school metal and power metal, sounding like an amalgamation of classic Manowar, Sabaton, and Hammerfall with folk metal melodies and influenced by Viking and Norse mythology.

The music is heavy, catchy, and gloriously cheesy (in the greatest Manowar-ian tradition) with the triple guitar attack of Dawid Grahn, Pähr Nilsson, and Mikael Fehrm. This is a band that doesn’t take itself too seriously but they are far from a metal parody band. Prophecies Of Ragnarök is chock full of 14 massive tracks filled with powerful riffs, soaring vocals, majestic anthemic choruses, and absolutely no filler.

Some of my favorites include Yggdrasil (Eriksson’s engaging and warm melodic tones are a highlight), the Sabaton-eque stomp of Gods of War (with the best lyric sung by a female “We’re fucking, we’re fighting, we bleed and we’re never gonna fail before the sons of Odin”. Talk about female empowerment!) , the folk metal fury of Defenders of Valhalla (with a battle cry straight out of Braveheart), the high energy title track, Fire Blood and Steel, and the album closer, the ridiculously catchy anthem We Believe In Metal ( two battle hymns of heavy metal that current day Manowar wishes they could still write).

If you are a fan of cheesy, over the top, melodic power metal, then Brothers of Metal is the band for you. There is nothing original in the music on Prophecies of Ragnarok, but there doesn’t have to be. Power metal music is not meant to be dissected in an overly long review or to be studied for a deeper meaning. This is an album to be played at high volume, horns in the air, headbanging, while drinking a flagon of mead. Brothers of Metal are the new Warriors of the World here to take up the mantle for heavy metal that Manowar dropped long ago.
