The Mascaron

Hey folks! Recently found out about these guys and wanted to share with you right away!

The Mascaron are Latvian and British musicians in a joint project, representing the melodic progressive metal genre. The Mascarons’ full line-up consists of five experienced musicians: Phil Owen (vocals), Arturs Berzins (bass), Gints Grinbergs (guitar), Ivars Kalnins (guitar) and Inga Lavrena (synthesizer, electronics), which together create and produce the bands’ sound. All members are experienced musicians with similar backgrounds of other local and international music projects while the idea and vision of creating music has brought together these creative personalities.

Skinner- The Enemy Within

Though they are defunct now, the San Francisco thrash metal band Imagika proved to be somewhat of a boom for the revival of the thrash scene in the Bay Area, spurning yet another wonderfully aggressive band in the form of Skinner, named after lead singer Norman Skinner. The Skinner lineup is filled out by Robert and Grant Kolowitz on guitars, Elena Repetto on bass, and Noe Luna on drums. Having worked through 2011 writing, recording, and playing live gigs, they set themselves up with the release of their debut EP The Enemy Within, in preparation for their eventual album release of Sleepwalkers, hopefully later this year.

Henning Pauly and all his projects

A month or so ago, I provided a review of Frameshift’s An Absence of Empathy, and now I get the pleasure of introducing more projects from this brilliant musical mind to you all.  However, the good Lady get’s the even greater pleasure of a behind the scenes visit shortly with Pauly as he puts the finishing touches on a couple of upcoming releases.

Damnation Angels – I Hope

Damnation Angels – I Hope

Formed in Britain late 2006, Damnation Angels is fronted by the brilliant vocalist PelleK (pronounced Pella-Kay).  What strikes me most about this band is the extremely well rounded compositions they have.  With all the familiar sounds that I love (symphonic elements like Nightwish, hugely powerful vocals like Circus Maximus, grinding guitar melodies like Symphony X, and ripping guitar solos like Dream Theater), they still manage to create a sound uniquely their own.

INFERNO

INFERNO

Hey folks!

Today, I’m with INFERNO.

Lady:  So, at the risk of sounding very cliché, how did your journey start?

Emre: Well, it was actually a coincidence, us getting together. Ramazan (Vocalist) was planning to try the vocals for the first time in his life and he Mustafa thought that they should form a band to, you know, improve while playing the songs they love to listen. Then, Ahmet (Ex-bassist), I (Lead Guitars), and Barış (Drums) joined the band and after this final line-up, “the journey” as you put it – began.

JOANovARC – Sisters

JOANovARC is a UK female rock band that recently had a second song placed on Rock Band 3. Some would shun artists that ‘sell out’ to such commercialism, but in today’s day and age, any exposure is good exposure. With the popularity of such games, I don’t see how it’s any different than getting a hit played on Casey Kasem’s American Top 40 (ok, demonstrating my age there). None-the-less, several acts have garnered more notoriety by getting their music on a gaming platform. I know a few people that were first exposed to Dream Theater in such a way.

Sleep Inside The Nebula

Hey folks!

Today, I’ve got a studio based musician from Worcester for you, Sleep Inside The Nebula aka Robert Smith.  From his bio, and I quote:

The current and first release ‘Atrocities’ launched the project in April 2012. The song familiarised the audience with the background of the creator, touching on the issue of how hurdles delay a persons dream. The song left a positive impression that shown the audience just a small taste of future expectations from the project.

White Lion – Little Fighter

With the 70s producing guitar legends that were pioneer’s in the realm of creating riffs, licks and sounds from six tiny strings that is and will be forever unparalleled, the 80s gave us a new set of hero’s that built upon that foundation to definitively establish the guitar as the dominant and crucial element of rock music.  There were the ones that gained immense popularity in that decade… the likes of Eddie Van Halen and Ace Frehley; those that broke new ground with their talent and innovation, and remain legends today – Satch, Malmsteen and Vai; and then there were those that got stuck on the fringe, and for whatever reason were never able to get the recognition they deserved.  In that group is Vito Bratta of White Lion, criminally under-rated and under-appreciated in my opinion.  For those of us that were able to appreciate 80s rock music as it unfolded, White Lion was your typical glam/hair metal band on the surface.  Dig a little deeper, and you’ve got a great four-piece with Mike Tramp’s vocals, and Bratta’s axe work carrying the band’s sound.

Zamankara – Olay Yeri Inceleme

Hey folks!

Today, I have a local band for you, Zamankara. I am with Ali (drums), Emre (bass guitars), and Mehmet (lead guitars).

Lady Obscure: So, let’s start with how you guys came together. How did your journey start?

Ali: It all began with a colleague, Eray, posting an ad at our workplace in early 2007. I, together with Abdullah – on the guitars – and Mehmet – just picking up the bass – replied and we began rehearsing. The funny thing is, Eray was the first to leave the band over what we want with our sound. Everyone else wanted a hard sound where Eray was more blues-y rock inclined. Then Emre joined the band and Mehmet went back to playing the guitar.
