M!ndgames- Travels

I have been a big fan of neo-prog for most of my life, starting with early Genesis, moving through IQ and Marillion, and onto Jadis and Enchant, so whenever I hear that sappy, artsy, proggy sound that only this genre can deliver, I turn into a ten year old boy with a shiny new bicycle.  Such was the case when I came across M!ndgames, a progressive rock band out of Belgium.  I’m not quite sure how I missed these guys, they’ve released three albums dating back to 2002, but who knows the number of good bands we pass over on our daily internet music browsings.

As with all prog of this nature, at least for me, it takes a few listens to grow on me, and the song Travels off of their 2010 release MMX is no exception.  The opening is a bit simple, a few hard chords, but once it gets rolling, it’s a wonderful piece of music.  I think the thing that hooked me the most is the whispy, melodic tone of the music, it really carried the positive message held within the lyrics.  The wonderful guitar work and soulful keyboards carry the song, great vocals carry the message, together they form a simple yet beautiful song.

The best thing about finding one song I like is knowing that there are more in store, M!ndgames has two releases previous to MMX, their debut International Daylight, and their sophmore piece, Actors in a Play, a concept album.  Looks like I got some listening ahead of me.

I always find it amazing that almost all vocalists in this style (Gabriel, Fish, etc…) sound so remarkably similar. Nice sounding track. I don’t listen to a lot of neo prog, but when I do, I prefer it with Dos Equis. haha. Actually, lately I am listening to a lot of neo-prog.
