Sweden’s melodic hard rock sensation, Eclipse is back with their 8th studio album titled Paradigm (out now on Frontiers Records). If you are a longtime fan of the band, you’ll be happy to know that they are firing on all cylinders, and Paradigm picks up right where 2017’s Monumentum left off. Huge arena rock choruses, massive hooks, and the charismatic vocals of singer Erik Mårtensson.

The album runs the gamut from hard rock anthems to beautiful and moving power ballads. The album starts off in fine fashion with the first single and powerful anthem Viva La Victoria, featuring heavy guitars courtesy of Magnus Henriksson, a driving beat, and a huge soaring melodic chorus featuring Mårtensson’s stellar vocals and harmonies. Mary Leigh keeps the fast pace going with a true hard rock gem. The song has hooks for days and another catchy chorus that will have you singing along after the first listen. Henriksson’s guitar solo has a classic Ace Frehley style and swagger to it.

Blood Wants Blood is a more mid-tempo rocker, but another example of how Eclipse are just masters of writing a perfect AOR song. The chorus with its perfect use of vocal harmonies will get stuck in your head immediately. The album slows down for the heartfelt power ballad Shelter Me. Mårtensson gets to show his sensitive side and conveys the lyrics perfectly. The beautifully crafted chorus soars with beauty and emotion.

United is another anthem with some folk influences with its use of guitars. The song is another mid-tempo track with strong vocals and a great chorus. Delirious picks up the pace with a high energy rocker of a song. The use of Henriksson’s heavy guitars and a killer solo section, Mårtensson’s killer pipes, and the great rhythm section of Phillip Crusner (drums) and Victor Crusner (bass) drive the song forward.

When The Winter Ends is another mid-tempo track that has Eclipse trademark sound with melodic verses and a strong melodic chorus with a wall of harmony vocals that give it a huge sound. Drummer Crusner starts the song 38 or 44 off with an extended drum fill and driving beat. The song has an energetic fast pace and some killer heavy guitar riffs and of course a melodic powerful chorus.

Never Gonna Be Like You starts slowly and builds with intensity with a steady drum beat and another fantastic refrain. The Masquerade is a heavy rocker with a very Queen meets Sabaton vibe. I know the Sabaton comparison might not make sense but it’s the first thing that came into my mind when I heard the chorus. This is an epic hard rock song that drifts slightly into metal territory but never loses the trademark Eclipse AOR sound.

The last song, Take Me Home is epic mid-tempo folk meets AOR hard rock song with a haunting melody and pounding drums. It’s great way to close out an album that continues to see Eclipse write great area rock songs that are catchy and loaded with hooks. If you’re a fan of Eclipse you will love Paradigm and if you’re a fan of melodic hard rock, this is the band for you.
