Q&A With LOMM

Escarlatina Obsessiva

Escarlatina Obsessiva

Hello Friends!

Today, I am with Karolina and Zaf, also known as Escarlatina Obsessiva, for another Q&A Session. They are a post punk, gothic punk and death-rock band from Brazil.

Now, without further ado…

Lady Obscure: Can you give me a little bit of history? How did you guys meet up? You know, how the journey started, what were you doing before…

:)

Karolina and Zaf: Escarlatina Obsessiva was formed in São Thomé das Letras, Brazil, in 2006, by Karolina Escarlatina and Zaf. We are a couple who met a long time ago. Our lives before we met has not too much importance  Since then we started to make our musical experiences that after long years resulted in our first album Chants of Lethe.

LO: So, you’ve got distinct genres listed there – what do them mean to you? How did you come to choose them?

K&Z: We don’t choose any specific genre at the composing time, and that’s indeed what really matters in what refer to genres: at that time we really feel music is beyond all this.

The songs come out this or that way spontaneously; we only follow their summonings, and we’re only loyal to them…

LO: Are you happy with your albums? I mean, what aspect of them do you think you guys nailed, and what parts do you think you could improve upon?

K&Z: Yes, we are happy with them. Surely we always want to improve, and we do what we can to reach this improvement. We are always investing in some new instruments, and studio stuff, always to improve our songs and the quality of our music in the studio.

LO: How has the overall reception been?

K&Z: It seems that they like what we do. We feel grateful!

LO: So, how about live performances? Album? Touring? Any international tours?

K&Z: We have been performing live since the beginning of the band. We always perform in our city, at the Woodgothic Festival. And we already made some great shows in São Paulo, with nice bands as such as Sullen Serenade (USA), Dive (Germany) and Plastic Noise Experience (Germany).

Next point is to film our new video, one more from our most recent album The Organ Grinder Songs and yes, we intend to release a new album soon.

;)

We have some international invitations to gigs abroad, an Escarlatina Obsessiva tour in Europe and USA, but these are plans for the future…By now we need to take care of our 7 dogs

LO: How’s the future looking? What’s next?

K&Z: Hummm, I really don’t know but I think the thing will be much better in the future.

People are more and more listening to what we do and watching our videos, and that’s very important for us. Maybe touring outside Brazil!!? It would be a fantastic experience.

We will shoot a video soon, and also record a new album, and there is also the Festival we produce in the city we live (São Thomé das Letras). So, if you live in Brazil, or even abroad, and want to see great Brazilians and other countries as France and U.S. post punk / deathrock bands, please, join us at Woodgothic Festival.

LO: Which is more exciting? Being on the road or studio?

K&Z: I think being on the road is more exciting, because the stage is really the most exciting place for a band. The studio is also cool, but being on the road you never know what you will find, the audience that will be there, it’s always fun and exciting.

LO: Who is composing the songs? Writing the lyrics?

K&Z: We both compose the songs, sometimes together, sometimes by ourselves. Zaf is the guy who writes all the lyrics, and he has been doing it majestically!

LO: When you’re writing, what’s more important to you? Catering to the audience or music for its own sake?

K&Z: We do music because we like it, and never to cater people. We do music because we feel the necessity to do it, and not to reach some kind of public. Music for its own sake: that’s the point…

LO: So what bands do you guys draw your inspiration from?

K&Z: There are a lot of bands that we have been listening to through the years. We try not to be influenced by anything during the compositions; we try to be pure. But we have a lot of bands we always listen to, as such as The Damned, T.S.O.L., Bowie, Virgin Prunes, New Model Army, and also great composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, and Bach.

LO: When you look back your music career, what do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?

K&Z: I think our greatest accomplishment was to record all our albums in our own studio, and to have filmed, produced and edited all our videos by ourselves. We are free! There are hundreds of bands that think “If you don’t record in X studio your music is shit and has no value”, but this is not true, and we show this in our 5 albums. We are totally D.I.Y., and we also recommend that to the other bands…Stop expending your money and do it by yourself!

LO: Thanks guys!

K&Z: Thank you Nem for this opportunity.
