Black.Dawn Romance is the debut album on Bakerteam Records from Italian crossover rock band Mechanical Swan. Combining hard rock with electronica and industrial overtones, Black.Dawn Romance is an album filled with melodic vocals courtesy of singer Pasquali Matteo, the hard rock riffing of guitarist Federico Truzzi, and programmed electronica drum beats The band lists among their varied and eclectic influences bands such as Nine Inch Nails, Cure, Alice in Chains, Muse, Foo Fighters, Deftones, Tools, Alter Bridge, and Depeche Mode. The band even pays tribute to their heroes Depeche Mode with a rocking cover of the Depeche classic “In Your Room”.
The albums opening track No Tears To Cry has a modern hard rock Linkin Park type vibe to it, minus the annoying rapping. Likewise, the second song Memories has a definite nu metal vibe and singer Matteo vocal style is reminiscent of Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. Human has an orchestral meets electronica sound with some nice harmony vocals during the chorus. Tear Me Down is an upbeat rock tune that would have fit in nicely with the goth/industrial rock style of the 90’s with such bands as Stabbing Westward or Gravity Kills. My favorite track on the album is the melodic and melancholy Emerald Bird, which features a lush and expressive duet with Italian female vocalist Alice Sacchi. The album slows down with a pair of run of the mill ballads titled If You and My Lonely Life. They are not bad songs, but just didn’t have enough hooks to grab me and keep me interested. The last song and title track of the album has a techno/electronica drum beat and some nice piano and atmospheric keys. Once again vocalist Matteo channels his inner Linkin Park, which is not a criticism, just an observation. Matteo has a pleasant melodic tone that fits the music perfectly. Overall, Black.Dawn Romance is a good debut which fans of Depeche Mode and Linkin park will enjoy immensely, however if you’re looking for something heavier better to look elsewhere.
