Bio: Founded in September 2009, Uvikra is a one man black/death metal project hailing from Vilnius, Lithuania. The single and singular member (Loikav), has created an unorthodox sound. While brutal and grisly in its rawness, this sound is tempered with a subtle progressive element. Unnaturally glottal vocals add to the unworldly feel while lamenting the futility of earthly existence.[pullquote_right]Uvikra is a one man band, and I’m the sole member Loikav who handles all the instruments and vocals. I began this project in late 2009 when I decided that I wanted to make black metal. Before that I was dabbling in various rock and metal. [/pullquote_right]
Uvikra has three releases to its credit. The first was the self-titled full-length released September 23, 2010. An EP (Patterns of Life) was released April 9 2011. Both of these releases are available for free download on Uvikra’s Bandcamp site.
The most recent material, gathered together in the form of the full-length Bi, was originally released November 15th, 2011 digitally. Badgod Music released it in CD format February 26th, 2013.
Genre: I chose it because I loved it and it seemed great for a one man band. I’ve branched out to something else since then though, but it was good for a properly focused start.
Evolution of the initial musical and thematic elements: I always start with riffs or chord progressions, just something on the guitar. Eventually after I build the song musically, I do the lyrics. The themes on the first album were mostly about death, suicide, and world destruction, but not in a very serious tone. After that it became more personal and vague.
Ideas about the album: Yes, for the most part. I’m proud of the songwriting itself, only sometimes the performance and production isn’t up to its full potential, but I’m trying to improve it currently.
Reception: Mostly good for the last album “Bi”. The general consensus is that it’s different and experimental, which I don’t disagree with. For the earlier material there was very little response.
Future plans: I’m recording a new album, hopefully will release it in the fall. It’s a new direction. After that I don’t know, probably will need a little break.
Composers: I handle everything.
Inspirations: It changes every year. It’s been 90s extreme metal, along with some classic 70s and 80s metal. Also various rock of the last 45 years, and various 21st century music too.
Lyrics, themes and concepts: On the album I’m working on now the lyrics are more important than before, so this time each song is specifically about something. But they’re personal, so I don’t want to reveal too much about it.
Preference; cater to the audience or music for its own sake: I’m catering to myself with my music. I don’t mind if it doesn’t appeal to most people.
Greatest Accomplishment: The last album “Bi”, but that will change to the next album when it’s done. It’s not unusual to be the most proud of your most recent work.
Anything else? Keep a lookout for the next album “Fulfill Thee”, coming soon.
