NICARUS
LOMM: Can you give a little biographical and historical info; who is involved in the band, and how did you guys meet up?
Nicarus is a “one woman band” it started as a duo in my 20’s in which i wrote the music and lyrics to, we were “Nereus Icarus” on the name of 2 greek gods. When the Duo ended Nicarus was born – in 2015. I then finished the songs i was writing for mamy years and finally released it as ” Holy Sun Father Spirit”.
LOMM: Pandemic has taken an emotional toll on everyone yet the arts have been hit especially hard. The musicians are vulnerable to financial upheaval. How have you guys have been holding up?
It’s hard for everybody. My heart is with all the venues, bars, PA and lightining people, But music and art will never be beaten! It was effecting me too since i also own a small mixing studio where i do all Nicarus stuff but also other musicians. But i must say that i was lucky enough to keep work since many people needed that Zoom new look as a trend, and i was the only one around knowing how to do it so i might have got alittle more work than before that, but i would trade it all to bring back sanity again!
LOMM: On the other hand you seem to have had a productive time. Is that right?
Yes, during these weird times i was ending the mixes for “Coal People, Coal Puppets” album and did the album art, music videos, wrote some more, but i was always self quarantined even before all that, art making always helped me to stay sane, so i just kept things as a regular routine that maybe for others it was a new thing.
LOMM: Modern sounds are my thing ☺ How about you? What does your genre means to you, why did you choose this genre?
I don’t like 1 specific genre, and i definitly wasn’t choosing one since i still am not sure where to locate my music in. For me it’s more like evolution. I sit and write i never know what comes but i can later collect them all into 1 srory line that we call album. Sometimes i have an idea about the entire album concept, sometimes just chapters in it, most of the times it just happens, i definitely am not liking just one particular sound or genre more than another, it will be impossible. I know what i don’t like though! it will be easier to answer that haha.
LOMM: Are you happy with your product? I mean, what aspects of it do you think you guys nailed, and what parts do you think you could improve
upon?
I am super happy about it all. The mastering is a stage i usually advice not to do yourself. Being the artist and the mixer is really being way too involved anyway and believe me it’s hard, the artist and the engineer are very different type casts, and they all live in me, playing both rolls is totally hard. Anyway, this time i took the risk and did the mastering myself, iv’e learned alot from the process and i reached a good result, and i would probably be doing even better on the next one if i’ll have to.
When i was recording the drums the studio i chose was smaller than i wanted so i am already having notes about the things i want to do different on the next one, but just minor things, i also have big wet dreams of recording on tape but…. we will see.
LOMM: How has the overall reception been?
Ho wow! amazing so far, i mean i haven’t released it yet and i’m already having supporters from all over the world! I am overwhelmed! But the best moments are when someone you appreciate like what you do. Like Kyuss Bassist – Scott Reeder and i started to talk around music he said really good stuff about my stuff, Scott kelly from Neurosis told me about H.S.F.S “it’s definitly not bad!!” Johaness from C.O.L said ” finally something good and original” when i think about it, i think i got more compliments from people i appreceate their music than the ordinary person on the street haha. Not complaining at all!
LOMM: Have you ever been on a tour? Given live performances? Is it tough for you not to be able to do so now?
Not yet but i really want to. I really hope we all be able to do it all again soon.
LOMM: What do you see for your future? How is it looking?
I just hope to reach more people, meet more people from everywhere, and grow music-wise and human-wise, i have so many musical dreams to accomplish i just hope to be lucky enough to be able to do even half of them all.
LOMM: Which is more exciting? Being on the road or studio?
I have a folder on my computer and everytime when ideas come i add it there and use it later. I usually write the music first and attach the right lyrics to it later with few changes if needed.
Not like in H.S.F.S that was more of a statement, lyric-wise, on how personal lyrics are not as important when knowledge was here million years before us and we can just pass it on as art should be doing, C.P.C.P lyrics from a completely different angle are coming from a very personal & spirtual breakdown i was going through and i found myself hours sitting down and writing all kind of crazy visions and thoughts i had, so when i came to work on it it was easy – my folder was full with lyrics that just waited to get out.
LOMM: Who is composing the songs?
Me.
LOMM: What bands do you draw your inspiration from?
Everything i have ever heard in my life and none of it at all. Inspiration does not come on demand. It’s like asking a rich person what he is going to spend all of his money on… Be musically rich and you’ll have money/honey to spend when you’ll need to.
LOMM: What’s more important to you? Catering to the audience or music for its own sake?
Music! Always! Audience made of individuals that loved the music, related to it, it’s pure! It’s magic! It’s a dream!
It’s starting & ending where it all should be – the music!
LOMM: When you look back your music career, what do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
Not to die. Lol. (Sad but true)
To survive life and keep going, with not compromising on who i am and what drives me and the music! Being able to do it my way in any cost, not losing myself with all the background noise, and turn a vision into a real product are all things i am extremely proud of.
LOMM: Anything else you think your fans should know?
No shortcuts.
Take the long path the one that will keep you wake at night from excitment because you know, despite what everyone else might think, that you’re doin it right!
Get it done!! You are never alone,
Reach me for help if you need to.
Thanks!
