Q&A With LOMM

PERSEIDE INTERVIEW

Senem (Lady herself) : Here ‘s a good one, I really enjoy your energetic music. Can you give a little biographical and historical info; who is involved in the band, and how did you guys meet up?
Julien (vocals/rhythm guitar):
We all met each other a long time before the band’s formation because we grew up together in the same hometown! The story of the band started when we were in high school, almost 20 years ago… we decided to form our own rock band after admiring our favourite bands for a while… It has a strong meaning for us because it remains us that we are still together after all this time: four little boys that wanted to rock in their hometown.

LOMM: Pandemic has taken an emotional toll on everyone yet the arts have been hit especially hard. The musicians are vulnerable to financial upheaval. How have you guys have been holding up?
Julien: Each member of the band has an extra music fulltime job. As we are no professional musicians, we don’t need music as a financial support in our career. I admit that it gives us the chance to carry on creating music without difficulty during these tough times and we are very grateful for that.

LOMM: On the other hand you seem to have had a productive time. Is that right?
Julien:
Yes, during this weird period, we carried on working on new stuff and we already recorded some new songs! We took advantage of the lockdown to prepare a lot of surprises when the crisis will be over!

LOMM: Cool! Tell us about your genre, what does it means to you, why did you choose this genre?
Julien: When we were teenagers, we were passionate about metal music. The feeling it gave us made us want to get on stage like our idols. Naturally, we started imitating our favourite bands, and then we created our own band. The genre came naturally as we started writing music as we always loved it!

LOMM: How did the initial musical and thematic elements evolve?
Julien:
As every beginner, we started playing music with covers of our favorite bands. Then, we began writing music in a (very) classic way!!! And over the years, we enriched our musical and lyrical skills with new inspirations and elements of life… The biggest change was we when we introduced electro parts in our music… Today, it would be difficult for us to describe our music style, because we really have a lot of influences. But this diversity is strength.
Senem: I agree.
Julien: and we would describe ourselves as modern metal, ranging from pop to metalcore, with catchy synths and old school guitars, nothing less!!! (Laughs)

LOMM: Are you happy with your product? What aspects of it do you think you guys nailed, and what parts do you think you could improve upon?
Julien:
We truly put the best of ourselves in the writing of this record, but we are also aware that the audience may not like it!!! Anyway, we still decided to do the things correctly, and to back the songs with beautiful music videos that we really loved to make… We enjoyed the process as it was for us to listen to the release! In my opinion, I like the melodies contained in the songs. For the next album, I think that we can improve the technical skills of the recording…

LOMM: How has the overall reception been?
Julien:
Very positive, we can’t believe it!!! This positive response is very heartwarming, and we are really surprised and happy that the audience gives such a nice feedback. It motivates us to come back with a more powerful content, so stay tuned!!!

LOMM: Have you ever been on a tour? Given live performances? Is it tough for you not to be able to do so now?
Julien:
The band was created 20 years ago, so we had the chance to give a lot of live performances! Everything started really quick after the band’s formation: we did a lot of gigs, had the chance to play live with huge bands like Soilwork, Cancer Bats, Protest The Hero…

Senem: Oh wow!
Julien: However, like every other artist, we haven’t played live since the coronavirus, and we are really impatient to hit the stage again…  We are planning to postpone our 2021 tour for 2022 and we’re crossing every one of our fingers for the quarantine being over until this…

LOMM: What is the next step for you? How is the future looking?
Julien:
There’s a lot of new stuff coming up! We just recorded new songs, and if the situation remains stable, our next tour will take place during 2022! Until this, 2021 will be marked with the release of new music videos and new songs. We hope that it will allow us to book some great gigs with bands we love and keep the inspiration to write new songs and make the experience even greater!

LOMM: Could you tell us about the lyrics / themes /concepts you focus on or plan to focus on? How did the ideas come about, and how do they influence the writing process? Who is writing the lyrics?
Julien:
I usually write the beginning of the lyrics, and the final form is the result of a discussion with every member of the band. For the themes, I’m inspiring of my personal life: I’m a medical doctor in anaesthesia and critical care. The things I’ve seen in the hospital make me remember that we have to love our life and seize the day. That’s a concept that we like to inject into our lyrics: enjoying the little things that are enjoyable, listening to music, losing yourself and live it up! In a more general way, all that we want for our listeners is to enjoy. To feel free to love the music as we love it, no matter the style or influence. In a day of your life, you can be happy, sad, angry or crazy. The best way to live these emotions is to let them flow through you and to express them without holding back… That’s what we want to share with our music: you can be all these things at once and the music helps us to escape; even for the time of a song or a concert. Living and sharing this with our listeners to make them live these emotions with us to feel better is the more important thing for us.

LOMM: Who is composing the songs?
Julien:
The guitar players start with a basic framework that we propose to the other musicians. Then, we all make musical arrangements to fit everyone’s taste and we play the song in rehearsal and then we play it live. If the song please the audience, we keep the final version for recording and drop it right to your ears!

LOMM: What bands do you draw your inspiration from?
Julien:
We have a lot of inspirations: personally, I came into metal music with classic bands like Metallica or Slayer. Adrien (lead guitar) was educated with progressive metal and Guillaume (bass) is a big nu metal fan! As for Anthony (drums), he’s into electro music and that’s why he loves to kick his bass drum so much!!! But when it comes to modern music, the bands that have inspired us the most are Avenged Sevenfold, In Flames, The Used and Enter Shikari!

LOMM: Which is more exciting? Being on the road or studio?
Julien:
We really love being in studio, but playing live is the reason we came into music, the goal of writing and recording new songs. I remember when we were kids: we loved to imitate our idols during their shows, and all we wanted was to get on stage to rock the audience. We started to make gigs quickly after the creation of the band, and we’ve always loved to share our energy with the public. As grown men, nowadays our goal is to keep this teenage energy on stage and remember the freshness of music through the shows!

LOMM: What first got you into music?
Julien:
I was in high school when I saw a metal band play for a local event in my hometown. I have been blown away by the energy that could be given by a band on stage. That was the moment I did “We want to do that”!

LOMM: What do you like the best about being a musician? And what is it that you do not like much?
Julien: I love everything in being a musician!!! (Laughs)

LOMM: Hahah, great, you won’t like this question then J  If you weren’t musicians, what would you be doing?
Julien: when I’m not making music or working, I really enjoy wakeboarding. Apart from making music, Adrien spends his time working on his photo and video business…

LOMM: If you could change one thing about the music industry, what would it be?
Julien: More music, less deceptive appearances!

LOMM: What’s more important to you? Catering to the audience or music for its own sake?
Julien:
We play the music that we love, but we play for the audience to forget their problems.  All we want for our listeners is to enjoy. To feel free to love the music as we love it, no matter the style or influence.

LOMM: What is the most memorable gig that you have played to date?
Julien: I remember of a gig where we drank too much before getting on stage. We were so f*cked up that we couldn’t play the songs properly… Anthony felt off his chair behind the drums!!! Awful… So my tip for beginners: don’t drink too much and play live!

LOMM: When you look back your music career, what do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
Julien:
People being pleased and entertained, forgetting their problems just for a while during these tough times, having fun listening to our music or watching our videos, would be a very beautiful thing for us.

LOMM: Who would you like to collaborate with?
Julien:
We already have a wonderful crew around us that grew up with us over the years. They are our motivation and I hope we will still learn to be better artists together in the future… I would like to continue collaborate with them and do something more powerful over time!

LOMM: Who would you like to go on a tour with?
Julien: Without hesitation, we would like to share the stage with the bands that had influenced us the most: Enter Shikari, The Used, In Flames…

LOMM: If you could play any festival in the world, which one would you choose? Tell us why.
Julien: We are French! So it would be a pleasure to play at the Hellfest. It has become legendary and it would be an honour for the four French metal heads that we are to play at home for this awesome festival!

Lady Obscure: YAY. Hellfest is my personal favourite too. I go there every year .. well until the pandemic anyway J
Ok.. Name some of your all-time favorite albums? Include controversial ones.

Julien: Avenged Sevenfold – City of Evil. I always loved the combination of techniques and emotions that A7X bring to their music. As a vocalist and as a guitarist, I can’t deny that it inspired me a lot to make music!

Guillaume (bass): Korn – Follow the Leader. We have listening to music since we were teenagers, and we still love the nu metal scene that we loved back in the early 2000’s. It was so fresh, with such energy… I think it aged very well, and a large majority of the bands of this era are still active today. Very inspiring to me.

Anthony (drums): Enter Shikari – Take to the Skies. We gotta say, we naturally make the music that we love to hear. Enter Shikari is all we love: energy, melody, powerful guitars, catchy synths, brutal breakdowns… Our n°1 inspiration.

Adrien: Village People – Cruisin’. These guys are like us… Some friends that make music together, and maybe more… (Laughs)

LOMM: What does your collection look like? Mostly Vinyl, Cassettes, CDs, Digital? A bit of everything? A total mess?
Julien: A total mess with a bit of everything including vinyl, cassettes, CDs and digital! (Laughs) Seriously, as a good 90’s kid that I am, my collection is mainly composed of CDs with metal, nu metal and alternative rock. I prefer vinyl to hear classical rock albums and other genres (rock’n’roll, rockabilly, hard rock, reggae…). But for my everyday listening, I admit that I can’t separate from my smartphone with all the music of the world in my pocket via the streaming platforms…

LOMM: What Country/Region are you from and what is the Metal/Rock scene like there?
Julien:
The band is located in a town in France called Lyon. It’s the second biggest city in France, so the music scene is very rich and varied. Every music style is represented and it’s very interesting for a rock/metal band, because there are a lot of opportunities to play live, with many very talented bands that we would recommend to you: you could give an ear to some bands like In Balance, Stereotypical Working Class, and The Amsterdam Red Light District.

LOMM: You can invite 5 people to a dinner party, from the future, the past, rock stars, a movie characters, you name it. Who are you having dinner with?
Julien: Charles Darwin, James Hetfield, Quentin Tarentino, Captain America, my grandson. I would love to see them have an argument during dinner!

LOMM: Cool 🙂 What is your weirdest memory in your music career?
Julien: Nothing weird… Just a bunch of groupies asking us to sleep with the four of us at once after a concert (we refused, obviously).

LOMM: Obviously. What is the weirdest gift you have ever received from a fan?
Julien: A bra thrown on the head of my guitar during a concert! I can prove it; I still keep the pic in my archives! (Laughs)

LOMM: If you had one message to your fans, what would it be?
Julien: The shame is to be ashamed. When you give 100% in your passion, you don’t have to be ashamed, you have to be yourself, and enjoy, no matter if you don’t please everybody. The few ones you will please will enjoy with you and truly live the moment.

LOMM: Anything else you think your fans should know?
Guillaume: I really like beer!

LOMM: Hahah, great to know 😛 Alright guys. Thank you for taking the time.
