LOMM: Can you give a little biographical and historical info; who is involved in the band, and how did you guys meet up?
Marcus Fraser: We’ve been a band for a little over a year now. Myself, Marcus as vocalist, Odin Wolf on Guitar, JB on Bass and Jack Farmer on Drums. A few of us met at school but we all came together through being into the same music/music scene, we like rock ‘n’ roll and we like to rock out at least twice a day, thrice on weekends.
LOMM: Pandemic has taken an emotional toll on everyone yet the arts have been hit especially hard. The musicians are vulnerable to financial upheaval. How have you guys have been holding up?
Marcus Fraser: We’ve just been writing music really, we all have side jobs to get by luckily. We have a lot of friends in the entertainment industry who have been hit hard, it’s a huge drag.
LOMM: On the other hand you seem to have had a productive time. Is that right?
Marcus Fraser: Being from Sydney NSW, the lockdown eased faster than other areas of Australia so we were able to head up to the Central Coast and record our EP in early July. It will finally be released in January and we can’t wait.
LOMM: Modern sounds are my thing J How about you? What does your genre means to you, why did you choose this genre?
Marcus Fraser: We all listen to all sorts of music but for me, I got into Bowie as a young lad and I’ve never really grown out of my 70’s glam rock obsession, I can’t help it. I think rock ‘n’ roll gives you the freedom to be who you want to be.
LOMM: How did the initial musical and thematic elements evolve?
Marcus Fraser: Naturally, just life. I think what anyone does artistically should represent either themselves and/or what’s going on around them at that moment.
LOMM: Are you happy with your product? I mean, what aspects of it do you think you guys nailed, and what parts do you think you could improve upon?
Marcus Fraser: I’m very proud of this EP, I think we nailed everything to be honest. Thinking the next release could be even heavier and sexier, maybe a little more heavy funk elements.
LOMM: How has the overall reception been?
Marcus Fraser: Fantastic ! Every time we’re out, we see more people rocking our merch, AND Alice Cooper digs it ! He played ‘Long Way Home’ on his radio show the other week.
LOMM: Have you ever been on a tour? Given live performances? Is it tough for you not to be able to do so now?
Marcus Fraser: I’ve toured as a drummer in another band all around Oz but Starcrazy are a new band and we didn’t have a chance to tour before Covid hit. We are actually able to do gigs here as Sydney has handled the pandemic pretty well, we just have capacity limits on venues. We’ve played only 5 gigs this year but looking to do many many more in 2021. It IS tough, I wanna shake my ass up on stage and everyone to love me, is that too much to ask?
LOMM: What do you see for your future? How is it looking?
Marcus Fraser: Money, cars, women.
LOMM: Could you tell us about the lyrics / themes /concepts you focus on or plan to focus on? How did the ideas come about, and how do they influence the writing process? Who is writing the lyrics?
Marcus Fraser: My lyrics are often inspired by friends, experiences, nightlife around inner-west Sydney. I usually focus on booze/drugs, love, drag culture, streetlife, just things that interest me.
LOMM: Which is more exciting? Being on the road or studio?
Marcus Fraser: Road for sure.
LOMM: Who is composing the songs?
Marcus Fraser: Myself and Odin write most of the tunes but JB recently wrote a killer song that I wrote lyrics to recently, and Jack has a few songwriting credits as he’s got a great ear for backing vocal/structural ideas.
LOMM: What bands do you draw your inspiration from?
Marcus Fraser: The Lemon Twigs, Mother Love Bone, Fishbone…
LOMM: What’s more important to you? Catering to the audience or music for its own sake?
Marcus Fraser: Music for ourselves.
LOMM: When you look back on your music career, what do you consider to be your greatest accomplishment?
1. Opening for Living Colour when playing drums in a band called, Flickertail.
2. Playing drums for a reformed, Buffalo (Oz rock royalty.)
3. Alice Cooper playing Starcrazy on his radio show, twice !
LOMM: Anything else you think your fans should know?
Marcus Fraser: We have a gig at The Vanguard in Newtown, Sydney on December 11. We’re opening for Acid Metal pioneers, Sabïre. We also have a killer new single coming out soon titled, Taking Down The Brutes. Give us a follow on Instagram or Facebook for more details !
